I opened a coconut.

While shopping for groceries, I bought a coconut for no other reason than I wanted to taste fresh, unprocessed coconut.  I was also curious how hard it would be to open.  Turns out, very hard.

I watched a few video tutorials online first, and I bored a few holes with a hammer and screwdriver pretty easily to pour out the water.  I think that coconut water tastes disgusting, by the way.

But then I spent about 20 minutes trying to crack its hard shell and barely managed to chip away a few fragments of shell.  I didn't think it should be that difficult to crack - the people online made it look like it split right open - until I decided that I was being way too gentle with it, wrapped it in a towel and whacked it with the side of the hammer with a lot more muscle.

And finally, it cracked open.  From there, it was pretty easy to pry the coconut out of the shell with a knife, peel off the skin and chop it into bits in the food processor.  I spread all the coconut flakes on a piece of parchment paper to dry for a few days and then scraped it all into a bag to store in the freezer.

Storebought bags of sweetened coconut flakes are no comparison to the fresh, natural taste of that just-opened coconut, but it was a helluva lot of work.  I really should bake a coconut cake now to do it justice, don't you think?
