a Photo Collection inspired by a breakfast of Oatmeal and Raisins...

Today's post is a collection of photos I took a month or so ago, which I have been waiting for the right time to share.  Since we've been out of town, and I'm still working on going through some of the photos from our trip, as well as trying to catch up with a new baking post/photo shoot, today seemed like a good day.

I made oatmeal for breakfast that morning, and as I stirred in brown sugar, cinnamon, protein powder and a little brown sugar, and watched the oatmeal simmer and thicken, I thought of the rare school mornings growing up when my mom would cook breakfast.  Usually, we ate cereal, pop tarts, or toast, but once in a while, she would get up early and have oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar, or maybe even pancakes with butter and syrup or jam, waiting for us on the table.  A hot breakfast on cold mornings was a welcome thing in that house, since the only heat source came from the wood stove in the living room;  the bedrooms were chilly, so we hurried to the front of the house as fast as we could.  Oatmeal was one of my favorite hot breakfasts.

A scrap of fabric, some sunny yellow flowers (weeds, actually) that I pulled from the side of the road, and a vintage yellow pitcher made for some interesting shots that morning.  One of the things I like about photography is that you can capture just the little snippets that you want people to see.  The room may be messy, but you don't have to show that; a backyard may need to be mowed and the patio cleaned up, but zooming in on a pretty flower pot can block out all that other stuff that you don't want to focus on.  I find that everyday items always look a little more special through the lens of a camera.
